Forget about waiting for integrated .flv support...emTube has given us symbian users what we've all be waiting for so long . and the best part is ..its FREE !! You can head over to http://www.emtube.yoyo.pl/ and download the app. Also ...please remember to donate to the author if you find this app useful.
The interface is so smooth and uses the S60 PIPS library (the same libraries used by the quake port to S60) . The menus and navigation are like any typical s60 menu and thus need no getting used to. There even is a version which uses the N95's inbuilt accelerometer and the screen goes to landscape mode when you tilt the phone.
The volume control keys at the side work too...and it allows you to play the video even at the point where 75% buffering is complete . You can also directly download a video to your phone and view it at a later time.
There is an integrated search feature where you can search for videos just as you would do in youtube. You can also browse the most watched and recently added categories etc.
In all this is the killer app so many users were waiting for. Thank you Sebastian Jedruszkiewicz for giving us this wonderful app.

Nokia Activity Monitor for N95/N95 8GB released
Info from the nokia website :
The Nokia Activity Monitor displays charts and statistics, in real-time, about your movements while walking or running. It counts the number of steps, and determines the distance covered and the energy expenditure. Summaries are stored in a diary so that you can compare your activity level on different days, and over longer periods of time. Your steps are detected by analysing the output from the accelerometer in an S60 smart phone. It is most accurate when you attach the phone to your belt, or upper arm, and it also works well if carry your phone in a pocket of your clothing. It might underestimate the number of steps if you keep the phone in a bag that you hold in your hand (as opposed to over your shoulder), and the most difficult case is when you hold the phone in your hand. Inevitably, false steps are detected sometimes, for example when you are cycling or driving.
The Activity Monitor currently runs on the N95 and the N95 8GB. You must have a memory card in your phone for the application to work. Be aware that the Activity Monitor's use of the accelerometer requires a fair amount of battery power. It does not shut down gracefully when the voltage drops, so keep an eye on the battery indicator during the day, and don't forget to stop the Activity Monitor before you go to bed!

Google Maps for Mobile goes 2.0
Google has released an update of its popular maps application for mobile phones ..and here's the best part. Now even NON GPS phones can find their approximate location based on the information provided by the cellular towers (cell-ID). This is a really cool feature ..although i bet it must have taken a lot of coaxing on google's part to allow the cellular companies to part with the locations of their towers. This is a great new feature where your approximate location is displayed as a light blue circle i.e the range of the cellular tower nearest to you. This is a real boon for all the non gps equipped phones out there. Kudos to google for making the maps application even more versatile.I'm sure Nokia will follow suit too. To see a demo ..watch the video below.

Nokia N95 Classic firmware v21 on its way...
Stumbled across this video of a symbian freak.com member demoing the yet to be released Nokia N95 classic firmware v21 (yes..thats a big leap from v12) via remote device access. As expected ...Nokia has implemented the demand paging feature and as you can see in the video ..there's still plenty of ram available even after opening 5-6 applications. There's also the inclusion of the search tool in the active standby screen and the new n-gage platform software. The inclusion of demand paging would also mean that you can squeeze more life out of your battery.I just cant wait to get my hands on this update !!

Nokia N77 unboxing pics
Well...the great guys over at WOM world sent me the N77 to review. Here are some initial unboxing pics. And make no mistake ..this phone is built specifically for one purpose ..and one purpose only... and that is to enable you to watch the mobile tv broadcasts on your mobile phone . Unfortunately ...India as of now does not have any mobile tv broadcasts (expect for in the capital city ..delhi) so i couldn't really test out this feature of the cellphone. And the reason i stressed on this feature is because this is probably what this device does best as i found it to be pretty lacking in all the other departments.
The camera is a 2megapixel camera (NO carl Zeiss optics) so its pretty mediocre. another thing that bugged me was the keypad...Its almost like a smooth slate with no indication as to when one key ends and another begins. After using my N95 for so long ..it was pretty difficult to type out an sms on this keypad and i found myself making a lot of mistakes.
Fortunately the battery life is the saving grace and the BP-6m battery seems to be quite the powerhouse.(wonder why nokia engineers didnt use this battery in the N95).
Build wise the phone pretty much resembles the N73 and could almost be called a N73 clone in some angles.
I will be posting a camera review soon ..so stay tuned.

The S.E shake-&-change-your-song feature comes to the Nokia N95
The recently discovered accelerometer hack has spurred a lot of developers into developing apps that utilize this feature of the nokia N95. My only question is ..why did nokia take so long to tell us about the accelerometer hidden inside the nokia N95..Or more interestingly ..why havnt they developed any apps that actually put it to good use ? Anyways ...some enterprising hackers have managed to fin a way to replicate SE's shake and change the music track feature on the Nokia N95. Its so cool to look at. I cant wait for this app to be released in public. Check out the video below.

Nokia MOSH client is out !!
Nokia has released a mosh client for its moshing network. Those who want to download the client can head over to : http://www.nokia.com/betalabs/mosh
and download the suitable client for your device.
But be warned ...This client is pretty useless and all it does is function as a shortcut that opens the link to the respective mosh pages in the native browser. I wish it was much more than just shortcuts. I wish it had the ability to browse files and upload files without having to open the web browser ... Which is something that apps like Peerbox and the likes have been doing for a long time. Nokia ...why dont you learn something from these people ?

Opera Mini has some serious competition !!
The guys over at teashark.com have just come outta the blue with a worthy contender to the java based mobile browser wars !! I am a huge Opera fan ..but after just a few days with this awesome browser ...the temptation to go to the dark side is just too strong. And mind you ...its still in the alpha version ...so there will be a lot more features added ..and a lot of the bugs ironed out ..in the near future.
Where do I start ?? Firstly... The whole download and installation process was smooth. No problems there . The app starts up faster than opera mini ..has a much bouncier feel to it and even manages to look much better in the process. If you are used to apps like widsets ...then this should be familiar territory for you .
As you can see from the screen shots ..the app has a very clean home page and a similar history page . The best feature i liked about it was the auto complete feature ..so typing out previously visited addresses isn't a pain anymore . Another great feature is that the app automatically detects all the rss feeds for the page you are visiting and you can add them via the rss feed option in the menu.
As you can see from the screenshots above , you have the option of zooming in and out of the page and even changing the mode from landscape , portrait.
You can even check , sync or remove feeds from the RSS feeds page .
The settings page is almost similar to that of opera mini and you can choose your orientation , the quality of the images and the rss feed notification.
The Verdict : In my opinion this browser is much better than opera mini 4 and the nokia inbuilt browser combined. The smooth scrolling and the auto complete features are awesome. Another great feature is the ability to search for a particular word in a page and even the feature where you can google up the meaning or definition of any highlighted words ..as shown in the screenshot. And considering that teashark is just in the alpha stage , the opera mini team will really have to pull up their socks to match this serious contender. A few bugs right now would be the way the browser handles logins . for e.g it wouldn't log me into m.facebook.com no matter how hard i tried , and i had to log in again for every single action i performed on orkut , but i'm sure these bugs will be taken care of in future versions.
In case you are interested or want to know more about this awesome browser.. head over to www.teashark.com from your p.c , or go to wap.teashark.com from your mobile browser.
Let the mobile-browser wars begin !! :D

Nokia BL-5C battery Replacement !!
Nokia is conducting a battery recall for some of the BL-5C models . More from the site..
Dear Nokia Customer,
This is a product advisory for the Nokia-branded BL-5C battery manufactured by Matsushita Battery Industrial Co. Ltd. of Japan between December 2005 and November 2006. This product advisory does not apply to any other Nokia battery.
Nokia has identified that in very rare cases the affected batteries could potentially experience over heating initiated by a short circuit while charging, causing the battery to dislodge. Nokia is working closely with relevant local authorities to investigate this situation.
Nokia has several suppliers for BL-5C batteries that have collectively produced more than 300 million BL-5C batteries. This advisory applies only to the 46 million batteries manufactured by Matsushita between December 2005 and November 2006. There have been approximately 100 incidents of over heating reported globally. No serious injuries or property damage have been reported.
Consumers with a BL-5C battery subject to this advisory should note that all of the approximately 100 incidents have occurred while charging the battery. According to Nokia's knowledge this issue does not affect any other use of the mobile device. Concerned consumers may want to monitor a mobile device while charging that contains a BL-5C battery subject to this product advisory.
While the occurrence in the BL-5C batteries produced by Matsushita in the time-period specified is very rare, for consumers wishing to do so, Nokia and Matsushita offer to replace any BL-5C battery subject to this product advisory.
The BL-5C batteries which are subject to the product advisory were used with the following Nokia models or separately as accessories:
Nokia 1100, Nokia 1100c, Nokia 1101, Nokia 1108, Nokia 1110, Nokia 1112, Nokia 1255, Nokia 1315, Nokia 1600, Nokia 2112, Nokia 2118, Nokia 2255, Nokia 2272, Nokia 2275, Nokia 2300, Nokia 2300c, Nokia 2310, Nokia 2355, Nokia 2600, Nokia 2610, Nokia 2610b, Nokia 2626, Nokia 3100, Nokia 3105, Nokia 3120, Nokia 3125, Nokia 6030, Nokia 6085, Nokia 6086, Nokia 6108, Nokia 6175i, Nokia 6178i, Nokia 6230, Nokia 6230i, Nokia 6270, Nokia 6600, Nokia 6620, Nokia 6630, Nokia 6631, Nokia 6670, Nokia 6680, Nokia 6681, Nokia 6682, Nokia 6820, Nokia 6822, Nokia 7610, Nokia N70, Nokia N71, Nokia N72, Nokia N91, Nokia E50, Nokia E60

This is the Update we've all been waiting for . Although existing N95 users wont be able to upgrade the ram on their phones... We can at least go in for the new higher capacity battery (If it is of the same form factor ...that is! ) . Cant wait for those battery packs to get to India. :)

Hands on with Zonetag v3.0 for Symbian
Yahoo Research Berkeley has finally released the S60 v3 version of Zonetag. Zonetag was one of those apps which worked beautifully on s60 v2 phones ,letting you upload your photos to flickr or your blog , at the same time allowing you to tag them with location specific tags. The new version for s60v3 devices does all this and more .. !!!
To download the app for your symbian phone you will first need a yahoo ID . The next step would be to go to http://zonetag.research.yahoo.com/managezt.php and login using your yahoo account. After logging in you should be greeted with a screen like this.
Just click on the install button on the top of the screen and you can choose between having the link sent to your mobile (cingular and t-mobile only ) , download via web browser ..or download the app to your p.c. After choosing the correct s60 edition.. You are all set to go.
I downloaded the App using the web link method. The installation was pretty straightforward. If the app asks you for a code while installing , you have to get it from the yahoo zonetag page you logged into on your p.c .
The best part about the new s60 v3 version is that it supports the internal GPS of the nokia N95. It can automatically get your current coordinates and embed these into the EXIF data when you click a snap. But mind you .. Zonetag has to be up and running in the background , and you should have a GPS fix on the satellites if you want the photo to be tagged.
You can tag the photos based on where you want them to be uploaded and even create custom tags through the yahoo zonetag page. For example ... I create a tag named "!blog: flickr" and all the photos tagged with this tag will automatically be uploaded to my flickr account too. Zonetag even has the ability to get RSS feeds ..although you have to set this up from the "customize my tag suggestions" on the zonetag webpage. You can change the post title , set permissions and privacy levels ( if you are uploading to flickr) , and manually enter the location (in case gps coordinates are not available).
Another improvement is the addition of SCANR to the zonetag app. Scanr is a service that lets you snap any documents / visiting cards and when you upload them , it automatically scans the photos and sends it to your email in a digital format.
To conclude ..I would say this app totally Rocks !! Uses very less memory , very stable ..and very very useful !! Other options to geo tag photos would be LocR and Shozu ..both of which i have reviewed earlier... but i can safely say that this nifty little app beats them all !! Although it might not offer as much media integration as shozu does (i.e webcasts , channels etc) ..but if you want a basic app which will allow you to geo tag your photos , and upload them on the fly ..then this is probably the best application out there. N95 owners ... this is one app you must have on your handset !!
N93i v/s N95 Comparison shots.
Some comparison shots of a N93i v/s a N95 both shot at 3 mega pixels. As you can see..the pictures from the N93i appear to be a bit washed out. I don't know if its because the N95 has a more powerful flash ..or is it just the way the image rendering algorithms on the N93i are programmed.Anyways ...I felt the shots from the N95 were very vibrant ..even in Macro mode ..as you can see in the second shot.Another thing i noticed in the N93i's menu ..was the option of "Flicker cancellation". Is this what the N93i uses for noise reduction in night mode photographs ?? But sadly enough..I found the n93i's flash wanting in snaps clicked in dark areas. Both the N93i and the N95 do equally well when the object is at say 20 cms from the lens, but when its further than that ..i found the N95's flash to be more effective and the picture quality much better. Of course the N93i will kick the N95's ass when it comes to Optical zoom...But for general use ..nothing beats the N95's camera quality...Even at 3 mega pixels. :)

I've got an N93i for two weeks !!
The wonderful people at nokia WOM world have sent me a Nokia N93i to review and use for two weeks. Since most of you folks out there already know that the N93i is a dedicated camera phone with a 3x optical zoom , I would mainly be comparing its picture quality with that of my N95 and focusing on which camera shoots better at 3.2 mpx (just to be fair to the N93i ..i will set my N95 to click at 3 mpx ) under different conditions. If you want to compare any other aspects of the N93i against the N95 ..do drop me a comment here and i'll see what i can do about it.
Here are a few pics from the unboxing.
Thank you WOM world !!

Utorrent Web UI goes mobile....
The good guys at www.utorrentmui.com have developed a simple web interface ..so that all the torrent junkies out there ..can remotely monitor their torrents from anywhere..via their cellphones.
To make this work you would need to have utorrent 1.6.1 or higher with web UI installed and activated(and also the port should be forwarded if you are behind a router/firewall). Then all you need to do is point your phone browser to m.utorrentmui.com and fill in the required info ..like the port number ..username/ password ..all you are all set to remotely control your torrents wherever you are.
The following functions are supported by the current version :
-Monitoring torrents running on your desktop PC from your mobile phone via WAP or GPRS
-Start, Pause and Stop all downloads in one go
-Customize the maximum upload and download speed rate in the µTorrent client
Awesome.. !! I'm in love with it already !! :o)

Nokia Customer Service .... more like... No Customer Service
One thing that really gets me irritated is when people skip timelines...And this is exactly the thing the folks at the Nokia Level 2 service centre at pune are good at doing. I purchased my nokia N95 in April 2007 just a few days after the official India Launch. After fiddling about with the phone and the accessories for a few days i realised that i was one of the many unlucky ones to get a faulty AD-43 audio adapter. Thinking that it would get replaced easily , i took it to the aforementioned service centre and submitted it in for replacement. The lady at the counter assured me that i would get a replacement within two weeks time. After two weeks i called them up again to ask them about it ..and they told me that it would take another two weeks. I called them up after another two weeks and they tell me that nokia hasnt sent the spares to them ...so i'll have to wait for an indefinite amount of time ..till the spares arrive ?? WTF ??? A level 2 Nokia Service centre telling me that they dont have the replacement ..and have no idea when its going to arrive ?? This really ticked me off and i called up the Nokia India Helpline number and registered a complaint with them. The nokia customer service associate assured me that they would speak to the people at pune level 2 centre and i should get my replacement within a week. I called the level 2 centre after a week and they still tell me the same old story. I called up the nokia helpline again ..and its almost like a deja vu experience !! Today ...i decided to go personally to the level 2 centre ...and again they tell me they still dont have the replacement. This speaks volumes about the sorry state of nokia customer service in India. Its been almost 3 months now ..and they've sent me running around pillar to post to get the AD-43 audio adapter replaced..which should have worked in the first place..!!
And I don't think that this applies only to me . A visit to any of the service centers in pune and you would actually see a number of irritated people , unsatisfied customers and equally pensive attendants. I love Nokia as a company ..and all the exciting phones and technology they debut...but they really have to pull their socks up in terms of customer service ...especially in growing markets like India. We Indians generally aren't very forgiving when it comes to bad customer service ...and the same people who voted to make nokia one of the super-brands of the year could be the same ones who would lead to its downfall in the Indian Market. Nokia ..are you listening ??

Hands on with Shozu v3.2
Shozu was one of those apps that was plagued with a lot of problems in the previous version . It used to hog memory , cause my N95 to crash and reboot randomly and i used to get the dreaded "memory full" error quicker than you can say jack sparrow !!
But now ..The shuzu team has released Version 3.20.. And its not just their logo that has changed !! Apart from adding a lot of more zucasts ...they have even added a lot more partners. You can now post your videos and photos to Youtube , Flickr , Kodak easy share , livejournal , wordpress , blogger ...and the list goes on. For all the people who are hearing about shozu for the first time ..you can head down to www.shozu.com and grab your free copy of the app.You have to sign up...and choose your phone model..and the link will be sms'd to you..or you can even grab it online. You can even schedule your zucast download time and download limit online ...so the zucasts you have subscribed to will be downloaded only during the time you have set it to.
But has the application really improved in performance and stability ?? I'd say yes !! With the previous version of shozu i had this problem where the gprs connection never terminated ,and i had to manually disconnect it from the connection manager. This issue seems to have been fixed with the new version.
Also ...There will always be a shozu process running in the background . I couldnt get the low down on how much memory this uses ...but judging from the fact that i dont get those memory full errors anymore...seems like the shozu team has done a pretty good job in keeping the memory usage low. EDIT : just found out that since i've installed shozu on my mem card ..and the process runs continously in the background ..I cannot connect my N95 in the mass storage device mode until and unless I kill the shozu app using some task manager app like swissknife utilities or ytasks :(
The standard features like Geo-tagging seem to be the same . The fact to be noted about the geo-tagging feature ..is that you should be locked on to the gps satellites for the geo tagging feature to work.So what i do is ..open the GPS data app in the background...let it lock on to the GPS satellites ..and then proceed to click photos.
There are a lot more zucasts too.Now you can subscribe to casts from buzznet , rocketboom and a lot more media providers.
The contact backup feature works as well as it did in the previous versions.Nothing new to report here....but its really good to have such a feature.Something that nokia has not been able to conjure up yet. I know we can backup our contacts to pc suite or lifeblog ..or even the memory card...but why cant nokia have a common online service for all its customers where they can safely store their contacts , pictures and videos ..upto a certain limit ??I'd rather wirelessly sync my contacts to an online service other than backing them up to my pc. I think this is one of the features that nokia should really look into before its too late and someone else steals the show.
In all I'd say the new shozu v3.2 app is a huge improvement over its previous version. Not only have the number of media channels increased ...but the interface is much quicker and memory issues have reduced considerably. It might not be the perfect app... but it looks like its heading in the right direction . This app has a lot of scope to be the next big thing in terms of media integration and push button publishing ..so i'm looking forward to a lot more improvements and features to be added to shozu over the next few months. As usual...Let me know what are your views on this app. It's always nice to have a good discussion going on . :o)
