Nokia N95-1 minor firmware update v31.0.017

The N95 classic has got some more love from nokia (probably for the last time) . This is a minor firmware update (the previous one being v31.0.015) and people who have upgraded have reported that like the previous update , this one too renders your phone unhackable. Users report that the update fixes the following bugs found in the previous version of the firmware:
  • Icon animation fixed
  • Language Bug Fixed
  • Bold Menu Fixed
There has been no indication yet if this fixes the dreaded "curse of silence" bug too. If you have updated and the curse of silence bug no longer affects your nokia N95 classic , do let me know.

As for me ...I'm sticking to my v30 hackable firmware for now. :)

N95 v/s N82 Night shots !!

The great guys at WOMWORLD had sent me a N82 to review a few weeks back. I wanted to post this article sooner , but I was really busy for the past few days. I tested out how the N95 fared compared to the N82 xenon flash. The photos were all clicked in pitch darkness just because I wanted to compare the effect of the xenon flash compared to the LED equipped N95.The result ? The N82 wins by miles. Simply no competition here. Although the N95 did manage to shoot some decent pics when the subject was in focus . Else ...its the N82 all the way !! If you're the type of person who parties a lot ..or clicks a lot of snaps in really dark places...then the N82 is definitely the phone for you !!

Check out the comparison photos here :

Nokia Activity Monitor for N95/N95 8GB released

Info from the nokia website :

The Nokia Activity Monitor displays charts and statistics, in real-time, about your movements while walking or running. It counts the number of steps, and determines the distance covered and the energy expenditure. Summaries are stored in a diary so that you can compare your activity level on different days, and over longer periods of time. Your steps are detected by analysing the output from the accelerometer in an S60 smart phone. It is most accurate when you attach the phone to your belt, or upper arm, and it also works well if carry your phone in a pocket of your clothing. It might underestimate the number of steps if you keep the phone in a bag that you hold in your hand (as opposed to over your shoulder), and the most difficult case is when you hold the phone in your hand. Inevitably, false steps are detected sometimes, for example when you are cycling or driving.

The Activity Monitor currently runs on the N95 and the N95 8GB. You must have a memory card in your phone for the application to work. Be aware that the Activity Monitor's use of the accelerometer requires a fair amount of battery power. It does not shut down gracefully when the voltage drops, so keep an eye on the battery indicator during the day, and don't forget to stop the Activity Monitor before you go to bed!

Opera Mini has some serious competition !!

The guys over at teashark.com have just come outta the blue with a worthy contender to the java based mobile browser wars !! I am a huge Opera fan ..but after just a few days with this awesome browser ...the temptation to go to the dark side is just too strong. And mind you ...its still in the alpha version ...so there will be a lot more features added ..and a lot of the bugs ironed out ..in the near future.

Where do I start ?? Firstly... The whole download and installation process was smooth. No problems there . The app starts up faster than opera mini ..has a much bouncier feel to it and even manages to look much better in the process. If you are used to apps like widsets ...then this should be familiar territory for you .

As you can see from the screen shots ..the app has a very clean home page and a similar history page . The best feature i liked about it was the auto complete feature ..so typing out previously visited addresses isn't a pain anymore . Another great feature is that the app automatically detects all the rss feeds for the page you are visiting and you can add them via the rss feed option in the menu.

As you can see from the screenshots above , you have the option of zooming in and out of the page and even changing the mode from landscape , portrait.
You can even check , sync or remove feeds from the RSS feeds page .

The settings page is almost similar to that of opera mini and you can choose your orientation , the quality of the images and the rss feed notification.

The Verdict : In my opinion this browser is much better than opera mini 4 and the nokia inbuilt browser combined. The smooth scrolling and the auto complete features are awesome. Another great feature is the ability to search for a particular word in a page and even the feature where you can google up the meaning or definition of any highlighted words ..as shown in the screenshot. And considering that teashark is just in the alpha stage , the opera mini team will really have to pull up their socks to match this serious contender. A few bugs right now would be the way the browser handles logins . for e.g it wouldn't log me into m.facebook.com no matter how hard i tried , and i had to log in again for every single action i performed on orkut , but i'm sure these bugs will be taken care of in future versions.

In case you are interested or want to know more about this awesome browser.. head over to www.teashark.com from your p.c , or go to wap.teashark.com from your mobile browser.

Let the mobile-browser wars begin !! :D
